What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a progressive condition that damages the optic nerve, often due to increased intraocular pressure. It develops gradually, usually without any symptoms, and can cause irreversible vision loss if untreated.

At Sandhurst Eye Centre, we provide early diagnosis, ongoing monitoring, and advanced treatments like medication, laser therapy, or surgery to protect and preserve your sight.

What to expect on your glaucoma treatment journey?

Here’s what the glaucoma treatment process typically looks like. We’ll walk you through each stage of your treatment so you know exactly what to expect, with personalised care and support before, during, and after your procedure.

Initial Consultation

Your ophthalmologist will assess your vision and measure eye pressure. A visual field test and OCT scan may be conducted to determine optic nerve damage and disease progression.

Treatment Plan

Depending on the severity, treatment may include medicated eye drops, laser procedures to improve fluid drainage, or surgery to lower eye pressure and prevent further damage.

Ongoing Monitoring

We’ll continue to monitor your eye health with regular check-ups and testing to ensure your treatment remains effective and your vision is protected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most treatments, such as eye drops or laser therapy, are painless or cause minimal discomfort. A minority of patients can have side effects to the eyedrops or the preservative in the eyedrops.

Follow-up frequency depends on your condition, but typically every 3 to 6 months to monitor pressure and optic nerve health.

Glaucoma can’t be reversed, but with early detection and proper management, further vision loss can often be prevented.
